Bee Hives at Commerce Court

Bee Hives at Commerce Court

Commerce Court is pleased to welcome two bee hives to its north tower for the next three years, as part of our commitment to a sustainability. As part of our sustainable site program, we do not use any pesticides that can harm birds, butterflies and bees.

We have partnered with Alveole to install two bee hives helping enhance the honey bee population in Toronto.

 Did you know?

  • The honey bee population worldwide and in Canada has suffered significant losses due to several stressors such as pesticides, monoculture (lack of food variety), and climate change. Since one third of our food supply is reliant on the work of pollinators, it is imperative that action is taken to help reverse population loss among honey bees.
  • Image of info sheetAt Commerce Court, we hope to contribute to the solution by joining other QuadReal buildings by hosting a home for honey bees and helping create a more sustainable urban environment.

Workshops

Introduction to Urban Beekeeping - July 12, 2018

On July 12, Commerce Court Property Management hosted Introduction to Urban Beekeeping workshop with an Alveole beekeeper in suite 1900. Participants learned about the elements that make up a beehive: the role of bees in pollination, the fundamental concepts of beekeeping and the history of urban agriculture. The workshop ended on a sweet note with honey tasting. Thank you to all who attended.

Honey Extraction Workshop (September 27, 2018 at 1:00 P.M.)

This workshop aims to build a deeper connection between the participants and the food they consume by delving into pollination and the honeybee’s role and vulnerability in large scale agriculture. With interactive activities, the group learns about the implications of a world without honeybees and is introduced to sustainable urban farming practices.
